With twenty years of federal government relations experience, LobbyWise President and Founder Justin LeBlanc knows firsthand that an expertly chosen lobbyist can facilitate public policy change for those whose voices might not otherwise be heard. Yet, far too often, he has seen organizations hire the wrong lobbying firm, sometimes even his own! Recognizing a widespread need for efficient, effective lobbyist recruitment services, Justin created and built LobbyWise.
Seeing the Need. Solving the Problem.
The old adage that the “squeaky wheel gets the grease” is never more true than in Washington, DC. Thousands of companies, communities, associations, and other organizations regularly exercise their constitutional right to petition the government by hiring government relations experts, also known as lobbyists. Even foreign corporations and governments retain representation to advance their interests.
Finding and hiring the right lobbyist isn’t easy, however. In recent years, more than 12,000 individual lobbyists have been annually registered with the U.S. Congress. Large, national law firms with an associated lobbying practice; large law-firm-styled lobby shops; boutique lobby firms with expertise in a particular issue area, state, or region of the country; or small, single-person shops – all represent brilliant choices for certain organizations or issues and potentially disastrous choices for others.
With tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in retainer costs on the line plus millions of dollars and make-or-break policies in legislative play, how do organizations make the right lobbyist choice? Some fall into the trap of retaining lobbying firms that represent similar interests, setting themselves up for potential conflicts that may leave them without the time and attention they deserve. Others are lured by flashy websites and big promises, retaining firms with high price tags but no real access to relevant decision-makers. Still others choose small firms with inadequate breadth or depth, or they makes decisions based on friendships or simple familiarity. In each case, the fit between organization and lobbyist can be quite poor and the return on investment is diminished or lost altogether.
LobbyWise was established to help clients cut through the confusion and hire a federal lobbyist with the right expertise, track record, and connections for their advocacy needs.
